One law yet I am not the master of,

tho easiest of all that has been asked.

No strength it wants, nor mastery thereof,

and peace it brings, even in being tasked.

And I am not the only one whose weak-

-ness is most fully shown in this concern.

But few have in them requisite meek-

-ness to let the law work out to a return.

I find that they who do it best heard not

the one who told me that I, too, should try

this simple law that takes no practiced thought,

whose thought is not a strain, but is a sigh:

the shalt (or more shalt not) I can’t fulfil

is that He said to stop, and to be still.
