A building made for beauty, where no sod
is laid but that it settles on the soul
with grace upon the eyes—as good to God
as it is good to make heavy hearts whole.
Whose windows gleam in dark as well as light,
whose images declare both truth and song,
which glimmer even in the cold of night,
and carry both the eye and heart along.
That has, as spires and as cornerstones,
the marks of glory, yet as soft as down
they fall upon the eyes, as gentle tones
of lullabies, the fears of young hearts, drown.
To eyes and hearts thou art the house of balm,
worthy of more than this, my first true psalm.
