To a Goose:
When I was very young, they all told me
your song was most obnoxious of them all.
That if you were around, there could not be
a time less peaceful should you sound your call.
They’ve said the same of many. And it’s clear
their voices are the ones that drive out peace.
No call of yours was e’er unwelcome here,
but most are too kind to tell theirs to cease.
But that’s not very kind. To hold your tongue
when one like you is mocked. Your call, I’ve learned,
is oft in friendship’s meek assembly sung--
in loyalty’s allegiance warmly earned.
We should all sing like you. And we should bear
with gratitude your song upon the air.
