CC: The Piper at the Gates of Dawn
I heard that someone didn’t understand
the message at the center of the Book:
when Mole and Rat observe the Great God Pan
protecting little Portly by the brook.
Is it not clear who Pan’s supposed to be?
Is it not obvious that He is Good?
Could you quite honestly find naught to see
but some old satyr playing in the wood?
How daunting it must be to see just that.
How frightful in a pleasant children’s tale.
Recall the word that Mole heard from the Rat
he said as they looked onward over-wale:
“Afraid! of Him? O, never, never!”—Say,
what other God has made you feel that way?
