With creatures, every once in every while,

you’ve got to do a somewhat silly thing.

Like giving a sad sea lion a smile,

or sitting with an elephant to sing.

You might draw pictures for a bird to see,

or sew a sweater for a staring cat.

You could give sugar water to a bee,

or maybe to a hummingbird, at that.

And though the things above and more do not

do much for all the creatures that observe,

somehow the silly deeds have somehow got

a simple silly grace to those you serve.

I think, when God gave charge o’er beasts to man,

he said to smile with them, if we can.
