CCXX: For Mr. Eliot
A cat does not want to be called “good boy”.
A cat does not such epithets enjoy.
When sitting nicely, do not so employ
the patronizing title of good boy.
A cat does not want to be called good boy
when feasting or when swatting at a toy.
A cat will not forgive those who annoy
by calling him a very cute good boy.
A cat does not want to be called good boy
by those who count themselves in his employ.
Do not your name in royal books destroy—
do not call any cat you see good boy.
But if you would, a cat’s attention, sue,
“your highness”, or perhaps “your grace” will do.
