When Moroni was made to understand
his enemy was dead, was he surprised?
I wonder, when the news had reached his hand,
he, too, bowed head for one he had despised?
I have to think he did; for no true soul
can hear a thing as this and then rejoice.
The Lord told Israel never to extoll
the dead who died without a righteous voice.
My heart is pierced, as was Teancum’s prey,
despite how uninformed are yet my ears.
May this good people soon reject this day
where spite was chosen over prayerful tears.
Despite whatever we might think is slain,
no javelin will truly solve our pain.
