CXXXI: The Game I Watched Until Both Teams had Lost
I sat along the bleachers with my friends
who cheered for different players, different teams.
For me, I could admire both teams’ ends,
and flitted in the middle of the seams.
But then one team grew hostile with offense,
and no correcting action did I take.
A wicked win I watched by silent fence
between my friends, with everything at stake.
I thought, how rude that we were barred from play.
I might have added something to the game.
A coach then asked me, “son, why did you stay
out there? Is this not yours, this listed name?”
Right there upon the roster it was clear:
I should have been out there; but I stayed here.
