A tyrant told me when I should be mad,

and what I should be happy for to see.

He told me what should make a good heart glad,

and what should make my heart weep bitterly.

He said that all his works had done much good,

if only I had eyes to see his mind.

He said that I would thank him, and I should,

or else my life would fall quite far behind.

But not my mother. …
